First Presbyterian Church of Toccoa has joined the Fellowship of Presbyterians.
During a recent question and answer meeting with the congregation, the Pastor informed the congregation that the church’s session had voted to join the newly organized “Fellowship of Presbyterians.” This organization, formed within the past 24 months, is attractive to churches like us, because it reminds us of our heritage. Furthermore, it moves the church forward on the most central issues of the faith. “The mission of the Fellowship is to build flourishing churches that make disciples of Jesus Christ. We believe in calling people to the core of what it means to be followers of Jesus – what ‘mere Christianity’ is and does – and not fixate on the boundaries,” states the fellowship. “We believe the Bible is the unique and authoritative Word of God, that teaches all that is necessary for faith and life.” Joining the fellowship establishes us as a church that seeks to live faithfully to the mission that God has given us, and to minister faithfully as we understand the Bible teaching us.
“Our interest in the fellowship was sparked by a change in the Constitution of the denomination. That change dealt with the removal of language that our congregation feels is important. The words removed by this change are, that ‘those who are ordained for service in the church will live either in fidelity within the covenant of marriage, or remain chaste in singleness.’ First Presbyterian Church of Toccoa has always maintained ‘fidelity and chastity’ as requirements for elders and ministers and have now placed those words into our own church by-laws.” Our joining the fellowship renews this commitment.
The First Presbyterian Church of Toccoa is one of the most historic churches in Toccoa. It began as an adult Sunday school in 1871. By June 1874 the church was organized and became The Presbyterian Church of Toccoa. Many of the services within the local community were begun at FPC Toccoa. Among these organizations that benefit the community are the soup kitchen, and the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The Pastor and the FPC congregation welcome all visitors. Sunday service times are 10 am for Sunday school and 11 am worship followed by a time of fellowship. Sunday and Wednesday night fellowships are listed on the church calendar.
